Wendy Minor Viny: Making Art on the Fly/The School Pickup Photo Series – Foundation Gallery
I work in a number of mediums, and I am constantly bringing new junk and cast-off items into my studio. All the individual objects have their traditional boundaries, but when placed with other interesting forms, they take on a new meaning, a new spirit. I construct sculptures and create collages from pieces of my life. I use paint, photos, digital images, fabric and found objects — anything that helps to weave the artwork together. I strive for the art to look seamless. My work speaks of time spent in nature and relationships that have formed who I am.
About the School Pickup Photo Series
The days I pick up my children from school I shoot photos with my iPhone 6s from the window of my truck- it’s a 25 minute drive, one way, through beautiful Appalachia. Because I mainly shoot blind, accidental beauty and compositional discovery is usually what I capture. What started as a mundane task has become my absorbing errand- as I sit in the student pickup line, I select, edit and post one photo to Instagram and Facebook – as an artist with young children this process allows me the opportunity to work, to see, to learn – while on the fly- I am in my sixth year of this practice, over 600 photos of my place and time in this world. Many thanks to the folks that support this endeavor! Instagram.com/wendyviny #schoolpickupphoto
